Apple Unveils Near Final Mac OS X Leopard
The near-final version of Mac OS X Leopard, unveiled today at the World Wide Developers Conference, introduces over 300 new features. They include a new Desktop and Dock with Stacks; an updated Finder featuring Cover Flow and a new way to easily browse and share files between multiple Macs; Quick Look, a new way to rapidly preview most files without opening an application; Time Machine, a new way to easily and automatically back up and restore lost files or a complete Mac; Spaces, a powerful new feature to create groups of applications and instantly switch between them; and enhanced iChat and Mail applications, which easily allow users to communicate even more creatively. Mac OS X Leopard, the sixth major release of the worldâs most advanced operating system, is scheduled to ship in October.

The world’s fastest web browser for Macs is now available for Windows PC’s. Safari 3, introduced at the World Wide Developers Conference in San Francisco, is the fastest browser running on Windows, based on the industry standard iBench tests, rendering web pages up to twice as fast as IE 7 and up to 1.6 times faster than Firefox 2. Safari joins iTunes in delivering Apple’s legendary user experience to both Windows and Mac users as well as full support of open Internet standards. Safari 3 features easy-to-manage bookmarks, effortless browsing with easy-to-organize tabs and a built-in RSS reader to quickly scan the latest news and information. As Steve Jobs’ WWDC keynote chugged toward its end with no word of iPhone, I felt a sense of foreboding. Won’t we even see a detailed demo? Leopard deserved a re-warming, and Jobs pulled that off brilliantly. So where the hell are the pre-sales fireworks for iPhone?
No fireworks. Instead, Jobs dumped a bucket of opaque glaze bearing the Press-mollifying label “AJAX & Web 2.0” over the reality that developers have been locked out of iPhone, completing the Apple no-touch trifecta of iPod, Apple TV and iPhone. Jobs said that the decision had been taken after a struggle over the best approach, and that the chosen solution, unlimited freedom to write server-hosted mobile Web applications that use Safari as a front end, gave developers access to the iPhone platform without sacrificing its security and stability…
