But still, I believe that feminism has contributed more than its fair share to this tendency of women to try to hang on to their youth.

If an older woman is competing against a younger woman for a man’s attention, then perhaps she will do whatever she can to make herself look younger.

If this is true, then the situation Gloria is railing against is the fallout from feminist policies.

Believing that women should be liberated from their marriages, feminism also worked long and hard to destigmatize divorce.

Over the past four decades this, unsurprisingly, has produced a spike in the divorce rate.

In turn, this has created a new cohort, the fortysomething divorcees who are back on the mating market, looking for second husbands.

It makes you wish for a return to the old days when people married young and built a life together. But, of course, feminism hated those days…

feminism has helped to create a class of thirtysomething husband-seekers whose prospective mates are eyeing younger women.

Harp seal sightings confound biologists

Harp seals from Canada are showing up in US waters in greater numbers and farther south than usual, and biologists want to know why.

This year, we’ve had four sightings of adult harp seals in North Carolina, which we’ve never had before. We typically don’t see them that far south

Seals are common in New England waters, where the most abundant type is the harbor seal, with a population estimated at about 100,000 the last time they were surveyed a decade ago. Gray seals are the second most common seal.

Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans says 9 million of them can be found off Canada and Greenland.

A decade ago, harp seal sightings off Maine were rare, said Lynda Doughty, marine mammal stranding coordinator for the state Department of Marine Resources. The numbers have picked up the past few years, and this year there have been 40 documented sightings — more than double the number spotted last year.

The cave was first described in the 17th century by Johann Weichard Valvasor(Slovene: Janez Vajkard Valvasor), and a new area of the cave was discovered accidentally in 1818 by local Luka Cec, when he was preparing the hitherto known parts of the cave for a visit by Francis I, the first Emperor of Austria. In 1819, the caves were opened to the public, and Cec went on to become the first official tourist guide for the caves. Electric lighting was added in 1884, preceding even Ljubljana, the capital of Carniola, the Austro-Hungarian province the cave was part of at the time, and further enhancing the cave system’s popularity.

After 1945, the gas locomotive was replaced by an electric one. 5.3 km of the caves are open to the public, the longest publicly accessible depth of any cave system in the world. The caves are also home to the endemic olm, the largest trogloditic amphibian in the world. The tour through the caves includes an aquarium with some olms in it.

Artist Paige Thompson had a foxy idea
when she puckered up in front of the mirror and started to paint these amazing animal designs – on her own lips.

Now her unique take on face-painting has become an Internet sensation, attracting thousands of followers to her website and sparking demand for new creations.

The 21-year-old was feeling bored when she stumbled across some Halloween make-up she had as a child and began to paint colourful and cute animals on her mouth before photographing them.

At first glance, it looks like a giant child armed with a box of crayons has been set loose upon the landscape. Vivid stripes of purple, yellow, red, pink, orange and green make up a glorious Technicolor patchwork. Yet far from being a childs sketchbook, this is, in fact, the northern Netherlands in the middle of the tulip season. With more than 10,000 hectares devoted to the cultivation of these delicate flowers, the Dutch landscape in May is a kaleidoscope of giddy colors as the tulips burst into life. The bulbs were planted in late October and early November, and these colorful creations are now ready to be picked and sold as bunches of cut flowers in florists and supermarkets. More than three billion tulips are grown each year and two-thirds of the vibrant blooms are exported, mostly to the U.S. and Germany.

WIND POWERED CAR SETS RECORDS

The vehicle, known as the Wind Explorer, uses an electric battery similar to those found in most of the current generation of electric cars like the Chevy Volt and Nissan Leaf, but rather than needing to plug in every night, the Wind Explorer comes standard with a 20-foot retractable bamboo mast that holds a wind turbine to charge the battery. The Wind Runner can also be powered—or perhaps more accurately “dragged”—by a kite, assuming of course that there is ample wind. The result is a lightweight electric car that weighs under 500 pounds and has a top speed of 55 miles an hour, all with close to zero emissions.

Wind-powered car sets records in a 3,100-mile road test

Two German inventors have created an electric vehicle that recharges the battery through a wind turbine carried in the car. To test the vehicle, the duo recently completed a 3,100-mile trek across Australia.

It is almost like German adventurers Dirk Gion and Stefan Simmerer saw the latest models of electric cars, and decided to see if they could go out and make the manufacturers feel bad. In a move that will have green aficionados cheering and gearheads gently weeping at the state of the world, a new electric car powered by a wind turbine has just been unleashed into the Australian wilds.

Rolls-Royce to Unveil Luxury Electric Limousine, May Cost Up to £1Million

In preparation for the Geneva debut of its electric car , Rolls-Royce will launch the website www.electricluxury.com this week, a portal to fuel a wider global debate seeking views on the question of electric luxury from media, VIPs and stakeholders.

Full technical specifications for 102EX will be announced at the Geneva Motor Show on March 1.

An electric powered Rolls-Royce limousine is set to hit the road within days, the luxury British car maker has confirmed.

Based around the existing £300,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom, the electric -powered version will be re-chargeable from the domestic mains and with zero emissions.

The car will tour during 2011, serving as a test bed to gather a bank
of research data which will be crucial in informing future decisions on
alternative drive-trains for Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.’

The standard petrol powered Phantom achieves only around 15 miles to the gallon while the electric Rolls-Royce will cost around 2p a mile to run – providing you can afford the price tag which is likely to be not far short of £1million.

Although sales are bucking the economic gloom, Rolls-Royce boss did admit that colour schemes are more in tune with the downbeat mood

Israeli archaeologists have hit on a stunning site in the Judean hills: a 1,500 year-old Byzantine basilica, which sits on top of an even older structure, which sits on top of a series of tunnels, which lead to a small cave that they believe might be the legendary burial place of the Old Testament prophet Zechariah. What do they intend to do with this marvel of antiquities? They’re going to rebury it, the AP reports.

But archaeologists don’t have the funds to maintain the church as a tourist destination, so they’ve decided to cover it back over with soil for its own protection. Curious observers have just one week left to check out the site, which boasts stunningly well-preserved mosaics dating back to the Roman era.

This alleged friend of democracy and Israel has overseen a rotten time in the country he dictates to, during which persecution of Christians and silly slanders against Israel – the Zionist sharks of Sharm el Sheikh – have flourished.

It would be wonderful to think that what replaces Mubarak will be better. But here’s the thing about Middle Eastern regimes: they’re all vile. The ones that are “friendly” are vile and the ones that hate us are vile.

Faster than a speeding bullet? More like faster than a supernova-propelled, hot blue supergiant!

In this stunning image fresh from NASA’s Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE), a bright star can be seen in the center of the shot. This star is called Zeta Ophiuchi, located 458 light-years from Earth (and 20-times the mass of our sun) in the constellation of Ophiuchus (yes, that Ophiuchus).

Why is Zeta Ophiuchi so special? It’s a runaway star, traveling at a breakneck speed of 87,000 kilometers per hour (or 24 kilometers per second). And how did it get accelerated to that speed? After all, stars don’t just careen around the galaxy — eventually being ejected from the Milky Way all together — for no reason.

The massive Zeta Ophiuchi probably used to have an even larger binary partner that exploded as a supernova.

At the moment of detonation, it’s orbital momentum shot it off into space at high speed.
